Makeup Trends: East vs. West

Makeup artists in Manila should be wired at all times to the latest trends in beauty and fashion. Being always updated can give them an edge on their career. Almost every season, month or in a blink of an eye, new trends or techniques pop out anywhere in the world, you wish there is an automatic feed of alerts to keep you posted. It may be a new hairstyle, a rouge shade of lipstick, another take on a summer outfit, or an entirely new look from head to toe.

Needless to say, fashion is always evolving. We are not suggesting you should follow the hottest trend right away as some of us have a signature style. Others follow by the book, or emulate their favorite celebrities. Some experiment on the latest makeup craze from a particular country or nation. Just like what we will show you below:

Japan
After a night out, we don’t know which one is worse: the actual pounding headache due to a hangover or looking the part. This is the makeup trend Japanese women rave today – the “Hangover look”. You’re definitely familiar of its appearance: red puffy eyes and disheveled hair. It projects an image of being a “damsel in distress” to be rescued by a “knight in shining armor”, or in that same effect. The disheveled or wet-look hair creates a sexy façade. Curious? South Korea
We often associate “puppy eyes” to kids, and to “Whitey” who is really begging for a doggy treat. But applying it – not acting it out – on adult females is a different story. This kind of makeup technique from South Korea accentuates the eyes only. It makes the eyes bigger and more alive. It was popularized by Hyuna, a South Korean singer and a co-star of Psy in the “Gangnam Style” music video. Do you need a crash course to pull this off? Watch it below:

China
As we google “unique Chinese woman look,” we’ve found a handful of interesting results. In a list compiled by cosmeticschinaagency.com, two makeup styles, both somewhat looking the same, are a fad: the “baby face” and “baby doll” look. We like to refer it as “Lolita” because it makes someone look like a child. The “baby face” turns someone cute and youthful. On the other hand, the “baby doll” is more defined compared to “baby face”. It involves heavy application of pink blush and lipstick.

France
Going from east to west, French women sport a simpler look. Their rule is “less is more”. They don’t do too much makeup. As Violette, a makeup artist based on Paris, tells Vogue, French women value healthy and shiny hair, invest on quality red lipstick, and want fashionably messy smoky eyes. But they’re quite into skincare products and even mix their own as they prefer to go organic, according to livingly.com.

United States
This one has a patriotic vibe. The “All American” look. It is the lighter version of China’s “baby doll” makeup style. American women prefer softer pink shades that make the cheeks rosy white and vibrant. Other American makeup trends are the “Boho Beauty” and “Queen of Country”.

Philippines
In the Southeastern region of Asia, the Philippines has a plethora of styles anyone can try out. You may watch it all in Cut Video’s “100 Years of Beauty: Philippine Edition” below:
